AutoCAD Tutorial: Converting a Drawing from Metric to Inch

Video Tutorial Transcript

Welcome. I'm Cindy Dunn, President of CCAD inc. One of the questions I am frequently asked is how to convert a metric drawing to an inch drawing. It’s really very easy and I’ll demonstrate how to do so in this video.

First, you need to verify the unit of measure in the metric drawing. Is it millimeters, centimeters or perhaps meters? In this example the unit of measure in the metric drawing is millimeters.

Next, you need to know the conversion factor. There are 25.4 millimeters in 1 inch.

Now, select all the objects with a Window, Crossing or just type CTRL+A.

Next, select the SCALE command from the right-click menu or Home tab.

Now pick a base point.

Since I can never remember the millimeter to inch conversion factor, I'll use the Reference option. The Reference option will let you input the current value and then the desired value. 25.4 is the Reference length and 1 is the new length. AutoCAD will divide 25.4 into 1 and come up with the proper conversion factor.

After the conversion the size of the dimension features are usually all out of whack. Next I start a new drawing with my own template file and copy and paste the scaled objects into the new drawing. Then change the dimensions to one of my dimension styles. I use the Layer Isolate command to make it easier to choose the dimensions and Layer Unisolate when I'm finished.
